How to Remove Stains from Marble Countertops

how to remove stains from marble countertops Orlando
If you have marble countertops in your kitchen, you may be wondering how to remove stains from marble countertops. Although marble countertops do not easily stain, it can happen if acidic substances such as tomato sauce, wine, or coffee sit on them too long. It does not matter how much elbow grease you use with a soft cloth and dishwashing soap; those stains are not going to rub out.

That means you will have to do something different than you normally do to clean your countertops. Here is some advice on how to do that.

An Ounce of Protection

You know the old saying. So, before giving you advice on how to remove stains from marble countertops, it’s best to tell you how to prevent them in the first place. It was just mentioned that acidic substances and liquids tend to be the biggest offenders when it comes to staining marble countertops. These substances generally have to sit on a countertop for 30 minutes to over an hour to leave a stain. So simply wiping a marble countertop right after cooking near it or spilling something on it should be more than enough to prevent stains from ever appearing on them.

Keep Them Sealed

The reason marble countertops stain is that their surface is slightly porous. This is not visible to the naked eye. These types of countertops do not usually stain because that porous surface has a seal over it. Over time that seal will wear away. That’s why it’s not a bad idea to reseal your marble on at least a yearly basis. It’s a simple task that does not take much time and special marble countertop sealants can be found at tile places, flooring specialists, and home improvement centers. If you don’t want to seal them yourself, tile professionals will usually do it for you for a reasonable fee.

Getting Stains Out of Marble Countertops

Now it’s time to learn how to remove stains from marble countertops. It’s not that hard if you follow these steps:
  • First, make a poultice using baking soda and water. You will want to mix it to the consistency of peanut butter or a thick paste.
  • Apply the poultice to the stained area on your marble countertop. Don’t skimp because it needs to go on in a thick layer to work.
  • Cover the just applied poultice with wax paper. Let it sit for 24-hours (48-hours for heavy stains).
  • After the recommended amount of time, remove the wax paper and wipe any poultice residue that remains off with a damp soft cloth.
  • You can repeat the process if necessary but one application will usually be enough for most stains.
